Project at State Street and River Road Expected to Cost $1,677,000
Excavation for another Camden defense housing project has begun, according to an announcement made today by Horace R. Dixon, secretary of the housing authority.
The site of the new project is the intersection of River road and State street. It will be known as William Stanley Ablett Village. It is the second and last development to be built under funds allotted to the Camden Housing Authority two years ago. The first development built under the allotment was for Negroes and is known as Branch Village. The project at River road and State street is for occupation by white defense workers.
Dixon revealed that within 60 days work will begin on a second Negro development. This will be constructed under a new allotment which also will provide for construction of still another white housing unit.
The River road project is being built to accommodate 306 families. The 23 apartment buildings, community building and utility building will cover an area stretching 500 feet along River avenue and 1000 feet along State street.
The buildings will be constructed of red brick. Each apartment building will consist of a row of 20 dwellings. Lawns will be graded surrounding the buildings, and drives will be constructed within the area.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $1,677,000, according to Dixon. The excavation was begun Monday by H. Roy Steele, Inc., a subcontractor. Vincent Caristo of Brooklyn is the general contractor.
