20th Street

Twentieth Street begins in what was originally called the Pavonia section of what is now considered Cramer Hill and ends in East Camden at Federal Street. The street had already been laid out by the time the 1887–1888 Camden City Directory was published. The street began at Harrison Avenue and runs south, across River Road to the Pavonia railroad switching yard, then from Howell Street to Federal Street, and across Federal Street for one block.

In 1954, with the development of the McGuire Gardens public housing project, another section of South 20th Street was created, which ran from Watson Street to Bank Street. Fourteen homes were given South 20th Street addresses. All were razed when McGuire Gardens was torn down and rebuilt in the 1990s.

923 North 20th Street — The Campbell Family

My DAD, William F. Campbell lived in Cramer Hill most of his life. He was a man of few words but a man who helped his community and friends when there was need. He was former President of the Cramer Hill Boys Club, an organization that gave a lot to the community for many years. He never looked for recognition, just believed in his quiet way that giving was part of life. He played for the Cramer Hill Wildcats years and years ago, boxed until he realized that maybe there was a better way to enjoy life. He loved Long Beach Island, and fished for enjoyment (I do not remember the two fishing clubs of which he was a member). He worked for Max Reihmann & Son roofing. When the family needed help he worked as a bartender at the Pavonia House Café at River Road and 26th Street. His integrity was unquestioned. His loyalty to his friends, his church, St. Anthony and the Boys Club were well known. Many ex-leaders of the Boys Club remember Bill although not many are alive today. Bill Bridges wrote a piece in the Camden Courier at the time of his death that said it all. I always wished that I was the father he was, the man that he was.

My memory fails me, I have not lived in Cramer Hill for almost 50 years, but I always remember 923 North 20th Street, as my HOME. Washington Elementary, VETS, WWHS, Mike's Sub Shop, the #15 bus, my local friends, Frankie Z, Ben, Teddy, Gus, Bobby N. and I could go on.

Cramer Hill was a good place to live. We unfortunately were isolated from the total integration of the rest of the city, we only had one black family in the community and they were the best educated family in the "Hill." I could say much more, but it is only important to me to remember my DAD and MOM, sisters and brother and friends.

1048 North 20th Street — The Lemmerman Family

My ancestor Gus Lemmerman built his home 1048 N. 20th St himself in 1915 and lived there until he died in 1980. He was a very stubborn man and refused to move out of the home, even when the area was getting semi-dangerous. I know that Gus's mother Emma moved in with him to help out when Gus's wife Augusta was having mental problems and wasn't able to act like a proper mother. My grandpop was Gus's youngest son Lester, and he had talked about his "Nanny" as he called her (which was his grandmother Emma) and how she took care of him and his older brothers. After Lester and his wife divorced, Les and his son Rick moved in with Gus for a while and that was around 1969 and he lived here for close to ten years.

William E. Jaeckel

William E. "Pud" Jaeckel (1888–1961) joined the Camden Fire Department in 1920 and served over thirty years with Engine Company 9 at North 27th and Federal Streets in East Camden, retiring on pension in January 1951.

Harold Hadley Pike Jr. (1926–1998) served the Camden Fire Department for over 30 years, rising from ladderman to Fire Marshal and Chief of the Bureau of Fire Prevention.

Henry J. "Beanie" Keating Sr.

Henry Joseph "Beanie" Keating Sr. (1920–2002) was a Camden firefighter who joined the Camden Fire Department on December 1, 1953, transferring from the police department, and served with distinction for over twenty-five years before retiring January 1, 1979.

Howell Street

Howell Street runs through East Camden from 20th Street to 30th Street, parallel to the Pavonia railroad tracks. Homes were built by the 1880s, and several businesses operated here during Camden's industrial years, including Nick's Auto Parts and the Pavonia Ice & Coal Company. The first Catholic parish in East Camden, St. Joseph Church, stood at 25th and Howell Street.

Boyd Street

Boyd Street runs through East Camden parallel to Marlton Avenue, from Carman Street to the Pennsauken city limits. Originally named Pfeiffer Street before 1924, it gained notoriety in the late 1980s and 1990s as part of the open-air drug market known as "the Alley."

Berwick Street

Berwick Street is in East Camden, running through the 2000 and 2100 blocks between Rand Street and Marlton Pike; the street was extended to South 20th Street after the McGuire Gardens housing project was built in 1954.
