The James G. Blaine School was located at the south-east corner of North 23rd Street at Wayne Avenue in the Pavonia-Cramer Hill section of Camden. Built by Stockton Township, it joined Camden public schools in 1899 and was closed in 1932.
Technician Fourth Class Isaac Z. Gosling (1911–1942) was born in Camden to Boston and Elizabeth Gosling; the family had moved to 118 North 23rd Street by September 1918. Called to service in March 1941, he died of pneumonia in England on September 3, 1942 while serving with the 85th Quartermaster Depot Supply Company, and was buried at Beverly National Cemetery in 1949.
Private First Class William Groome (1916–1944), a former New York Shipbuilding Company employee who had lived for six years at 119 North 23rd Street in East Camden, served with Company K, 351st Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division. He was killed in action at Anzio, Italy on May 12, 1944 and was buried at Beverly National Cemetery in 1949.
John J. Toal (1902–1971) joined the Camden Police Department on May 8, 1928 and was still serving as late as 1947. He and his wife Mary lived at 1115 North 31st Street in Cramer Hill at the time of the 1930 Census, and had moved to 902 North 23rd Street by 1947.
Robert Hartmann (1876–1967), son of cigar manufacturer Frank J. Hartmann Sr., grew up in Camden's labor movement and was elected the first president of the Camden County Central Labor Union when it was formed in 1908. The 1920 Census found him and his family at 16 North 23rd Street in East Camden.
Louis Rodger Mote (1884–1939) owned a home at 1111 North 23rd Street in Cramer Hill and worked at one of Camden's shipyards before serving as Assistant Superintendent of Streets for the City of Camden under Mayor Winfield S. Price. He and his wife Louise were active in 11th Ward Republican politics.
Staff Sergeant Frank J. Blair (1921–1944) of 987 North 23rd Street in Cramer Hill was a June 1940 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School who served as a B-24 crewman with the 374th Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Group, based at Kunming, China. He was killed in action on July 13, 1944, and is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
Henry Joseph "Beanie" Keating Sr. (1920–2002) was a Camden firefighter who joined the Camden Fire Department on December 1, 1953, transferring from the police department, and served with distinction for over twenty-five years before retiring January 1, 1979.
Charles Hobart Corson, commonly known as Hobart Corson , was born in Camden, New Jersey, on July 23, 1902, to W. Penn Corson and his wife, the former Catherine Kronenwetter.
23rd Street originates in the former Pavonia section — now Cramer Hill — and extends south to Federal Street in East Camden, noted in the 1887–1888 Camden City Directory. The James G. Blaine School stood at the southeast corner of 23rd Street and Wayne Avenue.
