Pershing Street

Pershing Street runs north to south, just west of Norris Street. It is divided into two sections by the railroad tracks that are now part of the PATCO high-speed line. The northern section extends from Lansdowne Avenue to Crestmont Avenue, while the southern section runs from Thurman Street to Sayrs Avenue.

The street was originally called German Street. However, during World War I, as anti-German sentiment grew in the United States due to a government-led propaganda campaign, the name was changed to Pershing Street. The new name honored General John J. Pershing, who served as the commanding officer of American forces in France.
