Pershing Street

Pershing Street runs north to south, just west of Norris Street. It is divided into two sections by the railroad tracks that are now part of the PATCO high-speed line. The northern section extends from Lansdowne Avenue to Crestmont Avenue, while the southern section runs from Thurman Street to Sayrs Avenue.

The street was originally called German Street. However, during World War I, as anti-German sentiment grew in the United States due to a government-led propaganda campaign, the name was changed to Pershing Street. The new name honored General John J. Pershing, who served as the commanding officer of American forces in France.

MRS. KOBUS ENLISTS TWO NEW FIREMEN The Camden Fire Department was increased yesterday when Commissioner Mary W. Kobus swore in two new members. The men, taken from the Civil Service lists, are Edwin W. Judd, 1052 North Thirty-fifth street and Joseph A. Gforer, 1461 Pershing street. Judd's standing on the lists was 84.07 and Gforer's 83.25. The men will be assigned by Fire Chief John H. Lennox.

Courier-Post Bureau TRENTON — The high rate of failures on police and fire examinations was repeated yesterday in the Civil Service Department's announcement of the results of tests for fire captain and patrolman in Camden City. In the captain's test, 23 passed, 64 failed and two did not show up for the test. In the test for patrolman, 10 passed, 32 failed and 14 failed to show. In the non-residents' test for Camden patrolman, six passed, eight failed and five did not appear. In the fire captain's test, Kenneth M. Clark of 111 North 26th St., Camden, a veteran, qualified with a score of 92.6, highest for the seven veterans who qualified. Joseph R. Gfrorer of 3040 N. Constitution Road, Camden, was highest of applicants with a score of 96.5. In the residents' patrolman test, Robert D. Craig of 817 Vine Street was high with 78. In the non resident's test, Edwin B. Hoffman of 514 Walnut Street, Audubon, a veteran qualified with 72.2 and Flem J. Hopkins Jr. of 113 Estates Ave., Pine Hill, was high with 78. Michael De Luca, grandson of Michael Nardelli, wrote on January 19, 2014:

My grandfather, Michael Nardelli, built and lived at 1826 Pershing Street, at Browning Street, from 1947 to 1978. He was a known builder, with many properties in Parkside and in the Whitman Park section. He also built the house and garages across the street, where my grandmother's sister and her husband, Vito and Anna Balducci, lived. A few houses up Browning Street lived my grandmother's brother, Anthony Bonetto, also from 1947 to 1980.

I lived there from my birth in 1969 until 1978. The property was incredible: my grandfather brought many plantings back from his native Bari, Italy. He arrived in Camden in 1919 and planted them on the property, which included three-quarters of the entire block.
