Kossuth Street

1700 Block of Kossuth Street - Sanborn Map of 1906

Kossuth Street extends in a southern direction from 733 Van Hook Street, crossing Central Avenue, Ferry Avenue, Jefferson Avenue, and Chelton Avenue, and ultimately terminating at the railroad tracks. This street, named in honor of the renowned Hungarian revolutionary Louis Kossuth, seems to have been established prior to 1871, during the period when the area was part of Newton Township. Originally, Kossuth Street concluded at Jefferson Avenue. However, it was extended in the early 1940s to accommodate the construction of the Chelton Terrace Public Housing project.
