Twenty-Ninth Street runs from the Delaware River south, across River Road to the Pavonia railroad switching yards. It starts again at Pleasant Street and goes to Westfield Avenue. It picks up again at Federal Street and runs south to Clinton Street. As in all numbered streets in Camden, it is North 29th Street above Federal, and South 29th below.

CAMDEN ATHLETE BADLY WOUNDED IN FRANCE One of eight orphan children, William Gooch, an East Camden boy widely known in athletic circles, has been severely wounded in France, a dispatch to that effect being received yesterday by a relative, Mrs. Mary Hart, of 209 North Ninth street. Private Gooch lived at 67 South Twenty-ninth street and enlisted in the heavy field artillery last December. He trained at Camp Greene, N. C., and has been in France several months with Bern and Frank Carver, East Camden chums. Gooch was with the Sixteenth Field Artillery. He was a football and basketball player of local prominence and was widely known in East Camden.

7 SOUTH JERSEY MEN GRANTED U.S. PATENTS Courier-Post Bureau Washington, Feb. 8.—John J. Hoehn and John B. Suomala, both of Camden, are included in this week's list of patentees who have been granted patent protection by the United States Patent Office. Both were granted patents on power transmission devices, both of which have been assigned to the Radio Corporation of America. Other South Jersey inventors granted patents are Benjamin R. Carson, Haddonfield, a sound producing apparatus; Frederick C. Barton, Haddonfield, phonograph turntable driving mechanism; Marvel W. Scheldorf, Haddon Heights, an acoustical device; Thaddeus R. Goldsborough, Merchantville, a speed changing mechanism, and Joseph F. Herbert, Audubon, a bushing remover.

Suomala’s patent, No. 2,106,773 (“Power Transmission Device”), was filed August 30, 1932 and granted February 1, 1938, assigned to the Radio Corporation of America. It covered an improved control mechanism for phonograph turntables that could switch between the era’s two common record speeds — 78 R.P.M. for standard records and the new 33⅓ R.P.M. “long playing” records — by means of a manually operated slide bar mounted on the phonograph’s motorboard, without needing to stop the turntable or remove a record already in place. The patent’s own text credits earlier co-pending applications by Frederick C. Barton and by John J. Hoehn (Serial No. 595,458, filed February 27, 1932, also assigned to RCA) as groundwork Suomala’s design improved upon. The patent document is available as a PDF (John B. Suomala & John J. Hoehn, Radio Corporation of America, 1938).

Tyler Avenue

Tyler Avenue runs northeast through Cramer Hill from North 27th Street to North 30th Street, one block north of Pierce Avenue. It is named for John Tyler, the tenth President of the United States (1841–1845).

William Stanley Ablett Village is a 306-unit public housing project at River Road and State Street in the Cramer Hill section of Camden, built by the Housing Authority of the City of Camden during World War II and named for a Camden soldier killed in action in France during World War I.

Carman Street ran from Broadway to South 8th Street downtown and, across the Cooper River, from 15th Street through East Camden to Woodrow Wilson High School at 31st Street. It is apparently named for William Carman, whose home at Broadway and Federal Street stood until 1902.

Division Street runs across South Camden. In 1997, a portion of the street was renamed Ramona Gonzalez Street to honor a community leader; the remainder continues to be known as Division Street.

State Street

State Street, established in 1856, runs from the Delaware River to the Cooper River in North Camden. Citizens petitioned for it to shorten the trip to markets and the ferry.

27th Street and Federal Street - 1950s

27th Street

27th Street runs from the Delaware River through Cramer Hill and East Camden to Marlton Avenue. Originally called Fulton Street before the 1899 annexation of Stockton Township, it was one of the main thoroughfares of the neighborhood and home to football star Mike Rozier.
