A mixing-tank explosion touched off a disastrous fire that swept the N.Z. Graves Paint and Varnish Company plant on Twelfth Street, Camden, between Linden and Federal streets — destroying more than half a million dollars in property, injuring three, and driving families from their homes. The Camden Housing Advisory Committee recommended that the city clear 20 blocks of sub-standard properties, 895 dwellings in two areas, to save on municipal service costs; Mayor Frederick von Nieda favored eliminating the areas but opposed spending city money without assurance of a return.

Harry Carle, 54, of Eighth and Linden streets, died after an illness of several months. He was survived by his widow, Bertha Stein Carle, two brothers and four sisters; burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Chief Colsey Dies at 67 of Heart Attack

Camden Chief of Police Arthur Colsey, a 27-year veteran of the department, died of a heart attack in his sleep at his home at 2937 Stevens Street. The Courier-Post traced his career from merchant at Ninth and Market streets and Second Ward councilman to patrolman in 1912 and permanent chief in 1934.

Ambrose Wesley "Wes" Faust served with the Camden Fire Department from 1951 to 1961, and later became a police sergeant with New Hanover Township, Pennsylvania, where he died on duty in 1977.

Charles H. Lawyer

Charles H. Lawyer (1924–1994) served with the Camden Fire Department from 1948 to 1974. Appointed on March 2, 1948 to Engine Company 9 in East Camden, he was promoted to Captain on April 1, 1956 and spent most of his career with Engine Company 6 at Front and Linden Streets. He grew up on North 35th Street in Cramer Hill and later lived at 1032 North 22nd Street.

Eleventh Street ran north from Market Street through to Pearl Street. Over time, North 11th Street was erased block by block, until only a short segment between Penn and Linden Streets survives. South 11th Street is a connecting road with no residential addresses.

2nd Street

2nd Street extends north-south between Front Street and 3rd Street, running parallel to the Delaware River until Mechanic Street. In the early 1970s, several buildings were cleared on the east side of North 2nd Street below Mickle Street to make way for the Royal Court townhomes and Mickle Tower senior citizens apartment building.
