Baring Street spans for one block, running from south of Chestnut Street to Kaighn Avenue, positioned between Marion Street and South 6th Street. The houses along Baring Street were constructed in 1888 by Wilson Ernst, a prominent builder in Camden during the 1880s. Ernst had established offices in the late 1880s on Benson Street above 4th Street and at 521 Kaighn Avenue. In 1886, George Reeser Prowell noted in his “History of Camden County, New Jersey” that “Wilson Ernst has been actively engaged since 1876, and about four hundred buildings, chiefly dwellings, attest to his enterprise.” Prowell cited Ernst as one of the three most active builders in Camden during that period.
