Seven Injured in Camden In the earlier accident in Camden the automobile in which the injured were riding was dragged more than 75 yards by the shifting engine. The more seriously injured in this accident are Albert Blair, 17, of 1144 N. 24th st., Camden, fractured skull; Robert Sharp, 16, of 1651 Alabama rd., Camden, fractured skull, and Joseph Godfrey, 10, of 208 Bailey st., Camden, mascot of the baseball team of which six other occupants of the car were members. Those less seriously injured were: Donald Gondolf, 17, of 1462 Belleview ave., Camden, driver of the machine, lacerated face; Alphonso Burdulis, 19, of 207 Erie st., Camden, concussion of the brain; Samuel Cohen, 16, of 840 State st., Camden, lacerated head, and Richard Miller, 12, 1173 Princess ave., Camden, minor lacerations of hands. All of the injured with the exception of Gondolf, Cohen and Miller are in Cooper Hospital. All of the boyes except Godfrey are members of the Camden Athletics, a team in the Camden Minor Baseball League, and had gone to a baseball field at 36th st. and River road for a twilight game in the car driven by Gondolf, and owned by his father, Augustus. Rain halted the game, and the sedan, with its seven occupants, had left the ball field only a few moments before the accident.

FOUR PERSONS BITTEN BY DOGS IN CAMDEN Three Children and Man Victims, One Canine Believed to Be Suffering From Rabies Four persons fell victims to the fangs of dogs in Camden yesterday, in one instance it being believed the canine was suffering from rabies. George Humphreys, aged 10 years, of 28 Morris street, was bitten on the wrist by a dog which he declares was mad. The wound was carefully treated at Cooper Hospital to prevent possible complications, although the boy had sufficient forethought to suck the wound directly after he was bitten. E. J. Gallaghan, aged 45 years, of 211 Bailey street, was bitten on the left hand while administering medicine to a pet canine, and Foreman Long, aged 11 years, of 23 Lincoln avenue, was nipped on the hand. These two were treated at Cooper Hospital. While 10-year-old Thelma Payne, of 870 Fairview street, was running to meet her father a dog attacked her, biting her about the face and arm. She was taken to the Homeopathic Hospital. New Collector Named Some surprise was occasioned in Camden's Democratic circles yesterday when it was announced that former Councilman Thomas Littlehales had been appointed a deputy internal revenue collector by Revenue Collector Iredell. When Isaac Moffett stepped out of office some months ago Mr. Littlehales' name was mentioned as a possible successor, but George Hampton, of Bridgeton, was selected. Then there came a mixup, in which Hampton failed to get the proper confirmation and Iredell was given the plum. Mr. Littlehales is widely known throughout Camden and the appointment has given comparative satisfaction among the rank and file of the local Democracy. Looked for Wife in Wrong Home When a scuffling sound on the shed roof at the home of Mrs. Earl Richards, of 1012 Lawrence street, aroused her sleeping children yesterday they awakened in time to see a man climbing through the back window. Then he proceeded to light numerous matches, several of which dropped on the floor. Mrs. Richards was aroused by the cries of her children and when she found the prowler rambling about upstairs she summoned Policeman Deith, who placed the man under arrest. Before Recorder Stackhouse he gave the name of James Giberson and said he was trying to find the home of his wife, from whom he is separated. He was sentenced to a month in jail. Mother and Daughter Burned In the explosion of gas in a range at the home of Mrs. Rosie Ross, aged 38 years, of 354 Cherry street, she and her daughter, Helene, aged 7 years, were badly burned about the face and hands. Both were taken to Cooper Hospital. The woman was preparing a meal while her little daughter stood beside her. The range refused to ignite at the first application of the match and when another effort was made the explosion came. A blinding flash of flame enveloped mother and daughter. Once Custodian, Now Inmate For many years one of the custodians of the insane asylum at Blackwood, former Freeholder Patrick McNulty, of Gloucester City, was taken to that institution from Camden by Under Sheriff Newitt yesterday. McNulty, now old and feeble-minded, was committed to the asylum by Judge Boyle after being adjudged insane following the fatal shooting of his son, Thomas.

FATHER OF 6 JAILED FOR THEFT OF MILK Declaring that he "cannot condone" stealing of milk from doorsteps, Police Judge Mariano sentenced William Buss, 49, of 633 Cedar street, to 10 days in jail. Arrested Saturday by Patrolman George Hemphill on complaint of Francis Engstrom, 316 Bailey street, driver of a milk wagon, for stealing a bottle of milk from a house at 611 Cedar street, Buss said he stole the milk because he has six children, three of whom are young. "With all the relief facilities in Camden, there is no necessity for stealing milk," Judge Mariano told him. "Somebody has to pay for the milk you stole and perhaps the house from which you stole it needs that milk for a baby." Judge Mariano said he would arrange with the relief bureau to provide for Buss' children while he is in jail.

Marine Corps Accepts Two Camden Youths The Marine Corps has accepted four-year enlistments for two Camden youths, Maj. Joseph T. Smith Jr., in charge of the Marine Corps recruiting station in the Philadelphia Custom House, Second and Chestnut streets, Philadelphia, announced today. They are William H. Beale, son of Mrs. Anna M. Cole, 933 North Fifth street, and Stanley J. Chorzelewski, son of Leon J. Chorzelewski, 514 Bailey street. The youths were transferred to the Marine Corps depot at Parris Island, S. C., for 10 weeks of recruiting training, at the completion of which they will receive 10-day furloughs before being sent to a school for advanced training or assigned to a duty station in the U. S., to an overseas base or aboard a Navy capital ship.

GEORGE B. SMITH George B. Smith, 81, of 515 Bailey st., died Tuesday in Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia. Born in Chester, Pa., he lived 44 years in Camden. He retired in 1945 as a maintenance foreman after 35 years with Warren Webster and Co., Camden heating equipment manufacturers. He was a member of the State Street Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Eliza; two daughters, Mrs. Susan Scythes, of Bridgeton, and Mrs. Edna Beckett, of Mt. Ephraim; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Edith Dischert, of Pennsauken; a stepson, Lawrence F. Costill, of Pennsauken; a sister, Mrs. Bertha Lane, of Far Hills; a brother, Edward Smith, of Levittown, Pa.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. FRANKLIN M. WALTON DIES AT AGE OF 61 Franklin M. Walton, 61 years, 520 Baily street, died last night from a complication of diseases. He was one of North Camden's most widely known residents. Together with Oscar Behm and George W. Evans, he founded the Pyne Poynt Athletic Association twenty-five years ago. He had been an officer in that organization for 23 years. For more than 30 years Walton was chief clerk in the West Jersey Wagon Works. He had been ailing for the last two years. He is survived by his sons, Freeholder Harry F. Poison tablets taken in mistake for other medicine yesterday caused the death at the Homeopathic Hospital of Mrs. Anna Aswald, 38 years old, of 527 Bailey street. While she was suffering from a violent headache early yesterday Mrs. Aswald secured a poison tablet in mistake for a headache remedy. She was taken violently ill shortly afterward. Coroner Hall gave a certificate of accidental death.

Drowning Spurs Move for Fence Along Riverfront City officials will be asked to erect a fence along Delaware river between Seventh and Eighth streets in an effort to prevent children from playing near the water. That was announced today by a North Camden resident as the result of the drowning Saturday of Robert Allebach, 10, of 533 Bailey street, who fell from a raft while playing with other children. The boy's father, George Allebach, 50, a former employe of the New York Shipbuilding Corp., has been confined to his home in a wheelchair since he suffered a stroke. The child's mother, Alice, is recovering at home from a lengthy illness. Neighborhood Action Urged Mrs. Ruth Stuhl, 37, of 523 Bailey street, mother of seven children, six of whom are at home, said that after Robert's funeral she will contact parents and all neighbors in the area to start action in asking the city to build a fence. One of Mrs. Stuhl's children was playing with Robert before the accident. Mrs. Stuhl's husband is William J. Stuhl, 47, blind news dealer at the RCA plant between Market and Front streets. She said they will ask the Pyne Poynt Athletic Association to take some action to promote greater safety for the children. "I would like to see a fence along the river," Mrs. Stuhl said. "Even if we have to contribute to pay a guard to keep the children from going near the water would be one answer. "The boys of the neighborhood complain the park guards chase them from the grass spots when they play in Pyne Poynt Park," Mrs. Stuhl continued, "when they go to the lower level they are chased by the bigger boys and that's when they go to the inlet and across to the peninsula." The drowning victim, a fifth-grade pupil at Read school, Fifth and York streets, was playing with four boys along the banks of the inlet of the river, adjoining Pyne Poynt park. Rescue Try Fails With him were Charles Stamp, 11, of 529 Bailey street; Timothy Brady, 9, of 530 Bailey street; William Reese, 11, of 924 North Fifth street, and Bobby Stuhl. On a "dare" from the others, Robert set out across the inlet on a raft, about the size of a door, for a barge moored on the other side, 25 feet away. The raft tilted and Robert, unable to swim, was thrown into the water. The Stamp boy tried to save him by holding out a long pole, which the drowning boy grasped, but lost his grip and went down. The other boys ran across lots to Seventh and Erie strets [sic] to notify a passerby who summoned police. No. 1 Rescue Squad from fire headquarters, Fifth and Arch streets, responded, and Firemen Arthur Batten and John Gryckiewicz, in a rescue boat, recovered the body in 10 mintes [sic] of grappling. Funeral Wednesday Squad members immediately applied artificial respiration and Dr. J. C. Lippincott, an interne at Cooper hospital, administered stimulants, but without success. The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital. Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Kenneth, 3, and George, 19, and two sisters, Shirley, 15, and Delores, 18. Services will be held in the home Wednesday at 2 p. m., where friends may call Tuesday night. Burial will be in Bethel Memorial Park, Pennsauken. The funeral will be under direction of Robert J. Blake. Pallbearers will include his friends, William Reese, Timothy Brady, Charles Stamp and George Stuhl. Two young cousins also will serve, the mother said.

MRS. ALICE MAY ALLEBACH Mrs. Alice May Allebach, 42, of 533 Bailey street, died in Cooper hospital Friday. A native of Mt. Carmel, Pa., she had been a resident of Camden for more than 20 years. Surviving are her husband, George D. Sr.; two daughters, Mrs. Michael Yates, Camden, and Miss Shirley R. Allebach, of the home address, and two sons, George D. Jr., and Kenneth, also of the Bailey street address. Also surviving are five brothers and two sisters, Thomas and Robert Thompson, both of Mt. Carmel, Pa., Jefferson Thompson, of Chester, and Russell and Harold Thompson, both of Camden; Mrs. Dorothy Kramer, of Allentown, Pa., and Mrs. Mildred Shaffer, of Selingsgrove, Pa. Edward Butler, 44, of 535 Bailey Street, was found in the Delaware River in May 1967. George Smith of 540 Bailey Street and James O. Jones of 544 Bailey Street were both Camden firefighters. Harry Chew of 545 Bailey Street married Dorothy A. Campbell at Broomall, PA, October 18, 1935.

MRS. REBECCA LEACH DIES AT HOME HERE Mrs. Rebecca Leach, widow of former Fire Captain Daniel W. Leach, died Saturday at her home, 624 Bailey street. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2.30 p. m. at the funeral home of Charles W. Hiskey, 423 Cooper street. Burial will be in Harleigh Cemetery. Mrs. Leach survived her husband less than two months, he having died Sept. 8 at the age of 70. He was widely known in political circles in North Camden, where he had spent his life. Before his retirement from the fire department in 1932 he was captain of Engine Company No. 4, located on Vine street near Fourth. Surviving the widow are two sons, Harold T. and Clifford H., both widely known business men in this city, and Janet B. Leach, a granddaughter.

Brewin, 64, of 613 Bailey Street, died in West Jersey Hospital in May 1959; she was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and past treasurer of its Women’s Auxiliary. Daniel W. Leach, former fire captain, lived at 624 Bailey Street (1924–1933). Lorraine Harris of 637 Bailey Street married Alveston Gary in November 1949.

MRS. HARRIET L. BONHAM Mrs. Harriet L. Bonham, 80, of 617 Bailey st., died Friday. She was a retired school teacher. She was born in Schickshinny, Pa., and lived in Camden for many years. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Carroll B. Wildesen, of Camden; a brother, Samuel Lanning, of Berwick, Pa., and a sister, Mrs. Emma Friedley, of Benton, Pa. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Sunday at a funeral home in Benton, Pa. Burial will be in Fairmount Springs Cemetery, Fairmount Springs, Pa. The funeral will be under the direction of the Murray funeral home.

John “Eggy” Barrett and Benjamin Shablack of 834 Bailey Street were murdered in their home. John Lee Stewart confessed to the murders, was sentenced to 25 years to life, and served 24 years before being paroled in 2004.
