Built for the Atlantic City Railroad in either 1923 or 1924 (sources differ), the Kaighn's Point Ferry Terminal replaced an earlier station also built by the ACRR, and served as the Reading's east bank station for service to locations like Atlantic City, the Wildwoods, and Cape May. Kaighn Avenue — also recorded over the years as Kaighns Avenue, Kaighn's Lane, Kaighn's Point Lane, and Kaighn's Point Avenue — is one of Camden's most historic streets, stretching from Kaighn's Point at the Delaware River eastward to the Admiral Wilson Boulevard and the Airport Circle in Pennsauken. The street bears the name of John Kaighn, who purchased 460 acres of land along the Delaware River in 1696. His family operated the Kaighn's Point Ferry, one of the most important crossings of the Delaware River for nearly two centuries.
The avenue bisects Camden from west to east, passing through successive neighborhoods — the riverfront commercial district, the Broadway shopping corridor, and the residential Parkside neighborhood — before crossing the city line into Pennsauken.

Kaighn's Point Ferry
John Kaighn purchased 460 acres of land along the Delaware River in 1696 and established what became known as Kaighn's Point. His descendants operated the Kaighn's Point Ferry across the Delaware for generations — one of the primary crossings between New Jersey and Philadelphia, carrying passengers, livestock, and goods.
The ferry landing at the foot of Kaighn Avenue was the western terminus of the street. The Capewell Glass Works, established by the Capewell family in the 1860s, occupied the land near 10–12 Kaighn Avenue at the riverfront.

Broadway & Kaighn Avenue
The intersection of Broadway and Kaighn Avenue was one of Camden's major commercial crossroads. The Toone & Hollinshed Department Store anchored the northwest corner from the early 1900s, later replaced by A.G. McCrory's 5 & 10 Cent Store. The fire that destroyed the Economy Store at 427 Kaighn Avenue on January 18, 1922, killed Fire Captain Martin Carrigan.

Innocent Victim of Street Fight Taken to Cooper Hospital in Dying Condition
Struck on the head by a brick thrown in a street fight at Ann and Sycamore streets, Camden, Meyer Pinsky, 16 years old, of 1415 Kaighn avenue, received a fracture of the skull and physicians at the Cooper Hospital fear that he cannot recover. Late last night the boy was still unconscious, efforts of the physicians to revive him having been unsuccessful.
Young Pinsky was an innocent victim of a street brawl. He was passing the intersection of Ann and Sycamore streets when a number of other youths are said to have become engaged in a fight.
Several bricks are said to have been thrown before Pinsky was struck. The police are making an effort to locate the participants in the fight with the hope of arresting the youth who is responsible of Pinsky's injuries.

At its eastern terminus, Kaighn Avenue met Admiral Wilson Boulevard at the Airport Circle. Opened July 1, 1927, the Airport Circle is generally regarded as the first traffic circle in the United States.

Born in Camden and living at 1113 North 18th Street in Cramer Hill, he was appointed to the Camden Fire Department in 1969 and served with Engine Company 7 on Kaighn Avenue and later Engine Company 9 in East Camden. He died on April 26, 1976 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

2nd Street extends north-south between Front Street and 3rd Street, running parallel to the Delaware River until Mechanic Street. In the early 1970s, several buildings were cleared on the east side of North 2nd Street below Mickle Street to make way for the Royal Court townhomes and Mickle Tower senior citizens apartment building.

Baring Street runs for one block in South Camden, from Chestnut Street south to Kaighn Avenue, between Marion Street and South 6th Street. The homes were built in 1888 by Wilson Ernst, one of Camden's most active builders of the 1880s.
